RE: campground near Temperance Michigan

The Vine has been taken over by the YMCA, totem pole is not a bad place more resoanbly priced than the KOA but I believe they close up for the season fairly soon. Avoid covered wagon it is a dump. As mentioned the best in Monroe county would be Harbortown and Sterling State park , sterling has full hook up sites for around 30$ the best deal going. also about 25-30 mins away is Maumee Bay state park in Oregon wchich is an excellent park.

RE: Fall trips

3 more trips planned between now and the end of october when we will call it a season and winterize. Last year I had a week off in October and we did a couple of the Michigan state park harvest festivals, one at brighton and the other at proud lake, midweek they were almost toatally deserted pretty much had the whole camp all to ourselves literally, it was nice but kind of creepy at the same time. Midweek at proud lake we were literally the only ones there, even the dnr employees left only coming back to ocasionaly drive around the park, Im used to the campgrounds always being packed it was very odd to be the only ones there.

RE: Nice Family Campgrounds near NW Ohio

how about harbortown rv resort in monroe mi, if you liked the fremont jellystone you would probably like harbortown, sterling state park in monroe is nice too but does not have all the bells and whistles. Another nice one in our area is the Sauder village campground in Archbold, they have a small campground that is very nice right behind the village, they have free wi-fi and campers have full use of the indoor pool in the adjcent hotel. They also have the Barn restaurant with buffet dinners and of course Sauder village itself, makes for a nice weekend trip.

RE: do i need a new truck

There is no way around it, you are way overweight, after you load up the trailer and all your gear and passengers in the suburban you will be looking at about 1000lbs overweight, you would be lucky to get a single season out of your transmission and rear axle if you try and pull that.

RE: 06 vs 08 Suburban (4.10 vs 3.73)

The tow capacity is only 7000lbs on the 08 with the 3.73 slighly higher for 2wd. You will definitley lose towing capacity on what you currently have. If you must have a newer suburban go for the 2500 rated at 9400 for 2wd and 9700 for 4wd, based on what you are towing.

RE: Digital TV Converter Box for RV/Travel Trailer

I frequent the TC area and we uaually stay at Interlochen. I was just there last month and I probbaly got a least a dozen good strong stations. You may need to keep roatating the antenna and doing the auto scan over. Perhaps something is interfering with your signal. We had a couple channels that came in great on one day and the next night it kept fading in and out and saying weak or bad signal, thats the downside to the digital TV the signal is all or nothing, you could still watch the weaker analog stations albeit snowy, with the digital you get nothing unles the signal shows a 50% strength or greater, at least on my reciever.

RE: Question about towing capacity & body style

I pull a 30 foot ultralight with a 2001 1500 suburban, I have a 3.73 rear end and the suburban is a 2wd, the factory tow rating is 7900lbs. My trailer weighs 4900 dry and just over 6000lbs loaded and ready to go. For the most part it pulls fine, a bit slow on any kind of hill but it does ok, I alway tow in 3rd with the tow\haul on. I would like to get a newer suburban but the tow ratings have decreased on the newer models 2007 and up.

RE: Need advice on moving from 1500 Silv HD to 1500 Yukon XL

The newer models 2007 and up have a lower towing capacity, the 3.73 is good for 7000 lbs and the 4.10 is good for 8000lbs if you can find one.

RE: How Many nights or weekends............

on track for 38 days this year, wife and I both work full time and have 2 school age kids. We do mostly weekends and take 2 seperate week long trips during the summer, we even do a couple of 1 night stands at the nearby local campgrounds. Our season lasts about 6 months from end of april until end of october. We would love to do more but with our schedules 40 days has been about the best we can squeeze in

RE: Small portable boat for family paddling around (PortaBote?)

i Have the 14ft porta-bote and it works great, the 14ft has 4 rows of seats, I use a 9.9 mercury to power it. Like you I have suburban and the bote goes on the factory roof rack with tie downs, the motor and all of the seats and hardware pretty much take up all of the room in the suburban behind the 2nd row seats.

RE: OLD CAMPERS (many photos included)

we had the exact same skamper growing up, My parents kept it over 20 years, the last trip we took in it was in 1989, The frame of the trailer is still being used today by a guy who converted it to a snowmobile trialer.

RE: General campground question

ohio state parks are great, I run into this problem alot to because I work 3rd shift, when we just want a quick local trip ,what we end up doing is reserving sat and sun ,then you can stay as late as you want sunday, the ohio state park fees are resaonable enough that you can pay for 2 nights and its still usually cheaper than paying for 1 night in many private parks.

RE: Campground near Mackinac / Tahquamenon Falls

you can't go wrong with the tahquamenon falls state park, we did the same exact trip you speak of last year and had a great time. We stayed in the lower falls campground and had a nice site right on the river, the bathouse was new and clean, there is a nice store there between the 2 camping loops they sell souviniers and ice cream, you can rent a row boat and row out to the lower falls and explore up close, I highly reccomend that. Down the road at the upper falls there is microbrewey\restaurant that we enjoyed. Tahquamenon falls is about 10 miles from Paradise Mi and maybe 15 miles from Newberry, The shipwreck museum at whitefish point is also close by and worth a look. It took us about an hour to get to the train station in su st marie, I was a bit disappointed in the train trip, mostly all we saw was brush, no animals and it took all day long to do the 100 mile trip, they gave you about 90 mins or so to get out and explore the park and then you head back. I highly recommend staying at the falls.

RE: Help me buy a Suburban

I think you will be fine with the 1500 suburban if you get the surveyor that you are interested in, however a couple of things to think about. You will be close to the limit,if you ever want to upgrade to larger trailer you will be limited to the lightweights. It is very difficult to find a half-ton with the 6.0 and just as difficult to find the half-ton with the 4:10, you might be better off buying the standard 5.3 half-ton with the 3:73 that is readily available everywhere and comes with rebates and incentives and have the gears swapped out independently for around 800 -1000 per axel, if you don't really need 4wd get 2wd slighty higher tow capacity and cheaper to do gear swap. I have a 2001 suburban with the 5.3 and 3:73 rear and tow a 6000lb trailer fully loaded, This is about the max for any half-ton suburban to tow comfortably, if this is your daily driver and you get the surveyor you mentioned you should be fine.

RE: Bunkhouse Ideas-- Experience

I beleieve the newer suburbans (2007and up) only have a tow capacity of 7100 with the standard 3:73 rear end, bumps up to 8100 with the 4:10 rear on the 1500 series.
